School Learning Plan

Fir Grove Elementary School

Our Story:

Fir Grove is a community of committed educators, students, parents and community members. We look at the whole child and work to foster growing learners. We promote academic learning and positive civic behaviors that fosters respect and responsibility. Our school is nestled within a walkable, diverse neighborhood where families speak 14 languages. We are a Title I School, about 50% of our students live in poverty. Traditions including annual Fun Run, Community Walk, Music Concerts, Family Nights, and Book Fairs are highly attended. Events bring our community together around the excitement of living and learning together. We recently qualified through the Community Eligibility Program as a 100% building-wide free and reduced meals for the entire school until 2024. Students can participate in Chess Club, Oregon Battle of the Books, and the 5th Grade Leader Program. It’s not uncommon to see our dog mascot, Furry Grover, waving in the halls and posing for pictures — one would be hard-pressed to find a rival for our spirit.

Fir Grove currently enrolls 398 students in grades PreK-5. 2% are Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, 3% are Black/African American, 6% are Asian, 9% are multiracial, 32% are Hispanic/Latino, and 47% of our students are White. There are 16 languages spoken by our students. 23% of students are English Language Learners. 13% are students with disabilities. 5% of our students are identified as Talented and Gifted.

Based on 2021-22 OSAS results, 52% of our students meeting or exceeding state benchmarks in English Language Arts and 35% are meeting or exceeding in Math. Our overall student performance in ELA is higher than the state average and our Math scores are just below the state average.

In all K-5 classrooms, we use the workshop model for instruction in math, writing, and reading. Knowing the students as learners, readers, and mathematicians continues to be a primary driver for designing and implementing instruction. Reader's workshop is a teaching model which allows students to engage in authentic reading experiences. Writer's Workshop is an interdisciplinary writing technique which can build students' fluency in writing through continuous, repeated exposure to the process of writing. Math Workshop is a framework that allows students to learn new math content, practice math strategies in a variety of ways, and reflect on learning through verbal or written sharing. Each of these areas necessitates conferring to set up individual goals, and strategic grouping during work time to link instruction to student needs.

At Fir Grove, we utilize the integrated co-teaching and consultation English Language Development models to ensure that students are in the classroom as much as possible with their peers. To best accomplish this, classroom teachers partner with an ELL teacher to serve students on a rotational schedule. The classroom teacher and the co-teacher collaborate to create specialized instruction with an emphasis on developing reading, writing, and oral language skills.

These practices provide us a pathway to fulfill our mission:

Our Fir Grove community believes that students will develop a lifelong curiosity and a joy for learning through working together to create meaningful relationships, honor differences, encourage excellence, and foster the social emotional well-being of our school community.
